Igniting the power of divine instruction in the lives of the Saints was the message of Elder Robert R. Steuer of the Quorum of the Seventy in the Saturday afternoon session of general conference.
Elder Steuer gave three keys to developing that power in an effort to become more teachable and humble.
He first urged members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be willing to be instructed. He warned against the temptation to look beyond one's self for correction.
"Some of us, rather than follow instructions or change ourselves would simply like to change the rules," he said.
Elder Steuer noted the New Testament story of Naaman's learning to follow instructions from the Lord even when he didn't understand the full purpose of those instructions.
Elder Steuer said a second way to gain divine instruction is to "put ourselves in the proper frame of mind and heart," and said this would be accomplished through prayer and "laboring in the spirit."
"This labor is real labor," Elder Steuer said. "It includes the very active steps of seeking, hearkening and studying the scriptures."
A third way to gain divine instruction is to be obedient and act on the commandments given, Elder Steuer said.
He quoted President Thomas S. Monson when he said, "The Lord expects our thinking. He expects our action. He expects our labors."
With these three points as guidelines and patience in learning line upon line, Elder Steuer said that members can gain a stronger testimony of the Savior and his gospel, and can become the Lord's true disciples.
