The light of faith is what guides members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints out of discouragement and doubt, said President Gordon B. Hinckley in the Sunday morning session of general conference.

"We take one step at a time," President Hinckley said. "In doing so we reach toward the unknown, but faith lights the way."

He related the light of faith we live by to the powerful headlight on a steam locomotive that constantly lights the way for the engineer to see into the night. He said faith is our headlight and if we will cultivate our faith, we shall never walk in darkness.

"We move forward on our eternal journey, one step at a time," President Hinckley said.

Although it may seem difficult at times to take that next step of faith into the unknown, President Hinckley said it is essential because faith is the power that builds and sustains the church.

"Faith is the very fiber that gives strength to this work," he said. "It is found everywhere, it is not limited to one country or one nation or one language or one people."

President Hinckley said the Lord has promised great blessings to those who are faithful, including revealing all mysteries even all the hidden mysteries of the kingdom of God.

"Great and at times unforeseen, are the ways of the Lord," said President Hinckley. "Marvelous are the fruits of faith."

May members of the church continue to walk in faith, President Hinckley said.
