Elder Richard G. Scott

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke of the character-building faith that is imperative in overcoming trials.

Heavenly Father's plan of happiness is conceived so we will have challenges, Elder Scott said.

Difficulties are given so we can grow, develop and succeed in this mortal probation, he added.

Elder Scott said the sustaining power we need in such times of uncertainty and testing is faith.

This faith must be founded on the love Heavenly Father has for His children, faith in the plan of happiness and faith in Jesus Christ to fulfill all His promises.

"Faith is not an illusion, but a power rooted in eternal principles," Elder Scott said.

Those who have not felt faith have not properly practiced the principles of the gospel, he said. We must trust in God and His willingness to provide help when needed

To show our trust, Elder Scott said to obey the commandments and demonstrate that He can trust you, be quiet to heed promptings of the Spirit, and be patient and understanding.

"Faith is centered in the trust of the Lord," he said.

Elder Scott used the Book of Mormon character Moroni as an example of learning to use faith more effectively.

"Every time you try your faith and act in worthiness on an impression, you will receive the confirming evidence of the Spirit," he said. "Every time you repeat this pattern, your faith will grow stronger. Sincere faith is understanding and strength to accept the will of Heavenly Father when it differs from our own."

Elder Scott said trying experiences can be edifiying.

The faithful, he said, should not forget that God will never try them more than they can manage with His help.

Choices need to be inspired of the Lord and consistent with teachings of Jesus to nourish faith, Elder Scott said.

"Faith will forge strength of character," he said. "Character provides foundation of spiritual strength."
