Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles encouraged parents to live the gospel as clearly as possible to set an example of faith and strength to their children.
"Live the gospel as conspicuously as you can," Elder Holland said. "Keep the covenants your children know you have made. Give priesthood blessings and bear your testimony. Don't just assume your children will somehow get the drift of your beliefs on their own."
Holland said parents can't hardly expect their children to get safely to shore if parents do not set an example of where to anchor their boat. Parents may not understand that even if they feel secure in their own minds regarding their personal testimony, they cannot make it too difficult for their children to detect.
Despite their earnest commitment to teaching children of the gospel, moms and dads can do everything right and yet have children who stray, Holland said.
"But even in such painful hours it will be comforting for you to know that your children knew of your abiding faith in Christ," he said. "It will be comforting then for you to know that if your children choose to leave the straight and narrow way that their parents were firmly in it."Let your children know of your belief in fasting, your earnest prayers, your love of the scriptures and of the temple, your faith in Christ and your love of God, Holland said.
"Be strong," he said. "Be believing. Keep loving and testifying. Keep praying. Those prayers will be heard and answered in the most unexpected hour. God will send aid to no one more readily than He will to the children and the parent of the child.
