As the 400th anniversary of Don Quixote approaches, BYU celebrates with a forum by Edward Friedman, professor of Spanish and comparative literature at Vanderbilt University.
During Tuesday’s forum, Friedman will discuss “The Heart of Don Quixote,” which examines the way Cervantes presents a satirical portrayal of the protagonist Don Quixote, while underscoring his humanity.
Friedman is the author of two textbooks, several edited collections and more than 300 articles. His published books focus on Cervantes, the picaresque narrative and the Spanish comedy. He has previously served as the editor of three journals and is currently the editor of “Bulletin of the Comediantes, devoted to historic Latin American theatre.
He received a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in Spanish and comparative literature. He served as president of the Cervantes Society of America from 2001 through 2004 and has held elected positions in many professional organizations.
