Brigham Young University brought out their hip boots and rain slickers and sloshed through the mud to an easy win over Los Angeles State College Saturday night 33-0 at the BYU stadium.

Phil Oyler returned the LA kickoff 40 yards to the midfield stripe where Dalton Overstreet, LeGrand Young, Donnie Dixon and Oyler carried to the Diablo 4-yard line. After two cracks at the LA line, Young went over for the first touchdown. Jay Weenig converted to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Cougars.

Sherrill returned Weenig’s kickoff to the 18. Successive carries by Stanley and Morgan took the ball down to the BYU 47 where 2 pass attempts by Sherrill failed. Sherrill’s fourth down punt was blocked by Cat center Famika Anae and the Cougars took over on the Devil 47.

Overstreet, Young and Oyler again led the drive to paydirt with Young going over for his second score of the half. Weenig kicked the point after touchdown to make the margin 14-0.

One play after the BYU kickoff to LA, Joe Martinez recovered a Diablo fumble on their own 22 yard marker. An offside penalty moved the ball to the 17, Overstreet hit the right tackle for four and Young moved [t]he ball to the 11.Young kept his touchdown monopoly by breaking over center for the third score of the yet young contest. Young scored his nineteenth point of the skirmish by kicking the extra point, Score 21-0, BYU.

Brigham Young kicked off to LAS to open the second half. Hufford, Alvarez, Stanley and Morgan drove to Y 31 yard line before a fumble drenched their scoring hopes.

After Pingree punted to the LA 47, Alvarez carried two successive times before he fumbled on the BYU 46. Dick Hunt, Mike Hinckley, and Herb Pingree put together a drive with Hinckley blasting 18 yards and Pingree skirting left end for 13 more to move the ball down to the Devils 9-yard stripe. A line plunge by Hunt and an offside penalty moved the ball to the one-yard line, where Dick Hunt rolled into paydirt standing up.

In the final canto, a Cat drive fizzled on the loser’s 6. After Morgan and Alvarez packed to the LAS 41, Ramos lost the slippery pill and the Cougars took over on Ed Hunt’s recovery.

Jones picked his way through the line for 26 yards and Ralph Migliaccio took it down to the five before Roy Jones went over on a fullback power for the final score in favor of BYU 33-0.
