Students and democratic leaders from across Utah gathered on Saturday, at the University of Utah, for the first annual statewide College Democrats Convention.
The convention is the first effort of the newly reorganized college democrats to formalize the organization and promote statewide unity.
BYU student Aaron Curtis currently serves as both College Caucus Chair as well as President of the College Democrats.
Curtis applauded the students in attendance and encouraged them to stay active in both the organization and local opportunities to change Utah's political landscape.
"We've had enough of how the republicans have been messing up our government federally and here in Utah," Curtis said. "We're going to turn Utah's one-party system into a true, two-party system, where both students and democrats have a voice."
BYU's chapter of college democrats had eight students at the event.
BYU chapter president elect, Randal Serr, explained his expectations for the chapter's upcoming year on campus.
"BYU Democrats is incorrectly named," Serr said. "It should be anything left of the conservative right. We are reaching out to everyone on campus that is different... Next year we are doing something that hasn't been done in ten years. We are going to reach out and serve the people."
While at the convention, students in attendance listened to keynote speakers, voted on a new constitution and elect the organization's first executive board.
