BYU Men's track and field team managed to "stay loose and win some events" Saturday, a feat most desired by coach Mark Robison, during the Best Buy Weber State Open.
Despite the wind, the overcast day and only a having a partial team at Stewart Stadium, the Cougars were able to post wins in the javelin throw, the shot put and the discus throw.
With occasional large gusts of wind, Sean Richardson threw a year best 119.1 feet in the javelin throw. Later, Oliver Whaley had a lifetime best in the hammer throw with a throw of 173.3 feet, Dustin Lawrenson took first in the discus throw with 169.1 feet and Daniel Lawson took first place in the shot put with a throw of 54.2 feet.
"It was a good day and hopefully next week will be better," Whaley said, after his throw.
Throwing coach L Jay Silvester said the wind plays a big factor in throwing events.
"The wind can either help you or hurt you," Silvester said. "But you've got to know how to fly it.
Much of the men's track and field team is getting ready for a meet next week at Utah.
Next week's meet will be the last regular season meet before the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championship in Texas, May 14-17.
"We had some good performances," Robison said, obviously pleased with the day. "We hope to heal up a little between now and Wednesday."
