Two events in Utah will celebrate Mother's Day in a different way.
Military Mother's Day will take place today at 2 p.m. in the Capitol Building Rotunda in Salt Lake City.
Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will host the event and be joined by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and Rep. Jim Matheson. Carmen Rasmussen, "American Idol" finalist, will sing the national anthem and the 23rd Army Band will play patriotic tunes.
A group of soldiers who are on extended duty will be online with a live Web cam broadcast projected on a large plasma screen TV. The public is invited. A reception begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Capitol's Gold Room.
On Saturday, the Provo chapter of Families Supporting Adoption will celebrate Birth Mother's Day with a "celebrate adoption walk" beginning at 9 a.m. at the Provo High School outdoor track.
"This walk is a way for the community to honor the sacrifices of birth mothers and for everyone to come together and celebrate adoption," said Tony Jewkes, chair of the Provo chapter.
Families and children of all ages are invited to participate.
Birth Mother's Day has been observed on the Saturday before Mother's Day since 1990 when it was first celebrated in Seattle. There are an estimated 6 million adoptees in the United States.
