The Trombone Choir performs 'Hex Files' by James Kazik Tuesday evening in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The BYU Trombone Ensemble kicked off four days of free performances by students in the School of Music Tuesday night.

The ensemble, composed of trombone majors, swung the jazz standard, "Body and Soul" and then slid into sweet hymns-"All Creatures of Our God and King" arranged by members of the group and "How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place." The ensemble also performed "Ave Maria" and a contemporary composition titled "Hex Files."

According to a press release from the School of Music, the series continues Wednesday night with performances by the Woodwind Honors Quintent, featuring flutist Annie Elmer, oboist Rebecca Tittelfitz, clarinetist Daniel Bailey, French horn player Kenji Hood and bassoonist Katie Nibley.

They will perform pieces by Gyorgy Ligeti and Taquito D'Rivera.

Nibley, a senior from Ashburn, Va., said the Ligeti pieces are woodwind standards. She also said, "We picked the piece by D'Rivera because it's a really fun piece to play. It has a lot of Latin-like influence."

Thursday, the series continues with the String Honors Quartet, who will perform pieces by Beethoven and Leos Janacek.

Friday, the Honors Brass Quintet will conclude the week's performances with some of "the most challenging brass literature out there," said Will Kimball, an associate professor in the School of Music.

Kimball said the quintet will perform a jazz tune, a tango and an arrangement of "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee" by Newell Dayley, who served as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications and then as an associate academic vice president for undergraduate studies.

All shows are free and start at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center.
