In a battle of undefeated conference teams, the BYU women’s basketball team prevailed on the road with a 62-46 win over Texas Christian to extend its winning streak to 10.
BYU was led by the performance of sophomore Mindy Nelson, who more than doubled her season average, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in the win.
“She is a great player,” BYU guard Shawnee Slade said. “Her confidence has grown this year, and I’m sure that has a lot to do with her success.”
The Cougars ended the first half leading 28-24, led by back-to-back 3-pointers by Stephanie Buhler with less than two minutes to go in the half. Thirteen of TCU’s 24 first half points came from the free-throw line.
BYU came back strong in the second half and held the lead for the entire second half of the game.
The Cougars’ defense was just too much for the Horned Frogs to handle. BYU held TCU to just 22 percent shooting from the field. During one stretch in the second half, TCU went more than nine minutes without scoring.
“We got some easy baskets because of our defense,” said BYU coach Jeff Judkins.
Jazmine Forman finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds. Slade’s defense also helped slow down TCU guard Helen Sverrisdottir.
“It was my strategy to take her out of the game,” Slade said.
The Cougars outrebounded TCU 43-35.
BYU will continue conference play Saturday against New Mexico in the Marriott Center.
“Hopefully people will realize we are a good team.” Judkins said.
