The No. 11 BYU hockey team fell well short on Thursday, losing 7-1 to No. 5 University of Colorado at Boulder at the Peaks Ice Arena in Provo.
The Cougars were not playing their best in the first period causing them to come out of the period down 0-3 with only 12 shots to Colorado's 24 shots.
"In the first half, for some reason, we were intimidated by them," BYU head coach Stan Weiss said. "We didn't play the body. We didn't check properly. Our mind was not in it. We didn't skate with them and we dug ourselves a great big hole."
After the second period, the Cougars gave up three more goals on only 11 shots.
"Our team came out flat. In the first period we just didn't play well," forward Jeremy Weiss said. "Later in the game we started playing a lot better and executing the game plan that was originally drawn out. Our team started hitting more and the physicality of the game picked up."
In the third period, the Cougars showed improvement as Weiss put the Cougars on the board with their only goal.
"If we play the way we know we can and the way we're taught to then we'll be a top notch team," coach Weiss said. "We'll stress some of the things we need to be doing and we'll show that when we execute we're really a great team."
