Whether singing the 20th Century Fox movie fanfare, a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or the "Spiderman Theme," Vocal Point always captivates its audience.

BYU's premier nine-man a cappella group, Vocal Point, will perform an almost sold-out set Friday and Saturday at the Covey Center for the Arts.

Ariel Johnson, a member of Vocal Point, from Highland, Utah, is excited to perform in a different setting.

"For as long as the group has been in existence, I think, the concerts have always been in the de Jong," Johnson said. "But it's definitely going to be a different feel. It's a smaller theater, which has some advantages to it because we're closer to the crowd, and it can have more of an intimate setting."

Johnson said people will enjoy the original concert they offer.

"We're such a unique group in that we do things that no other a cappella group does, as far as the choreography and music and vocal percussion," Johnson said. "I think if you have any interest in music at all it's just a fun night out."

James Stevens, the technical director for Vocal Point, enjoys his work with the group.

"It is one of the few groups that focus on contemporary music, as opposed to the classical eras," Stevens said. "It's more modern music from our day - rock, jazz, pop and even sacred music."

Stevens said audiences enjoy the rich harmonies of the vocal arrangements.

"A lot of times we'll have all nine people on a separate part," he said. "That makes the music a lot of fun to listen to because it's not your regular four-part harmony."

But the group has more to offer than just harmonies.

"We also add a lot of choreography to our shows and that makes it a lot of fun," Johnson said. "And then the variety of the music makes it really entertaining."

Vocal Point is also releasing a digital version of its 2008 CD, "Nonstop," on March 17.

According to a press release, "While the album 'Nonstop' boasts the refinement and polish of a studio setting, the group manages to capture the excitement and vibe of a live show."

Tickets for this weekend's concert may be purchased at coveycenter.org or at 801-852-7007.
