A new hamburger restaurant, Stumpy Burger, will be opening on Center Street in Provo next month. The owners are looking for artists to create artwork to decorate the restaurant.

The owners of Stumpy Burger, Don and Sheri Friis, are looking for artists to create works of art on half-inch thick 4-by-8 foot sheets of plywood. The art will be placed vertically along the walls, extending from the floor almost to the ceiling.

The submitted art will be displayed in the restaurant for a year and then rotated out with other work. There is room for 23 pieces and the artists’ work may be sold during the year that it is on display.

Artists can use any medium, but the main theme is people.

“We want it [the art] to meet the standards of the church,” Don Friis said. “So no vulgarity, no hand gestures. It’s going to be at the discretion of Sheri.”

The Friises opened a restaurant called Stumpy Burger in Shellknob, Mo., where they moved after Don retired.

“We started that in 2006 and then we had a prompting to move to Provo and look for a place,” Don Friis said. “We found this and we are hoping to open around the middle of April.”

Artists who are interested in creating artwork to display at Stumpy Burger should call Sheri at 801-446-4320 or e-mail her at stumpyburgerprovoutah@hotmail.com. There is a $50 entry fee and all work should be submitted before the end of April.
