Matt Ah You to transfer
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall today announced senior linebacker Matt Ah You will transfer from BYU.
“Matt has made a decision to transfer to finish his final season of eligibility, and I have granted him a release,” Mendenhall said. “I appreciate his contributions to our program and wish him the best as he pursues his personal goals.”
A graduate of Lone Peak High School in Highland, Ah You earned letterman honors all three seasons with the Cougars, seeing action in 26 games during the 2003, 2004 and 2008 seasons. Last year he played in all 13 contests, including two starts. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound linebacker totaled 68 tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery in three seasons with the Cougars.
Johnson named to All-MWC team
Coming off a strong year of competition, BYU junior Brady Johnson has been honored as a member of the 2008-09 All-Mountain West Conference men’s golf team.
The Mill Bay, British Columbia, native is coming off a strong year in which he finished in the Top 10 at three different tournaments and had one other Top-20 performance. He came in seventh place at the Baylor Intercollegiate at 3-over-par after posting a fall season round-low of 69 in the second round. He followed that up with a ninth-place finish at the Pacific Invitational.
Johnson scored collegiate career-low rounds of 68 in the opening rounds of the John A. Burns Invitational and the USC Intercollegiate, along with the first and third rounds of the Cougar Classic. At the USC tourney, he finished in fifth place overall at 4-under-par. His best finish of the year came at the Cougar Classic with a second-place performance at 10-under-par, helping the team to its first victory of the year.
Zinanti, Ramirez named MWC
Softball Pitcher, Player of the Week
BYU junior first baseman Andrea Ramirez and junior righthander Christie Zinanti have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
“Both Christie and Andrea have continued to play well,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “Andrea has been great at the plate and has been in the middle of a lot of our runs, while Christie continues to dominate in the circle.”
Ramirez, who hails from Simi Valley, Calif., batted .583 with a double and a triple, totaling two RBIs during four games last week. The junior went 6-for-8 against the MWC-leading San Diego State pitching staff.
Zinanti, a native of Pueblo, Colo., receives her second consecutive weekly award for her appearances in both games of BYU’s doubleheader at San Diego State on Saturday. She earned her 50th career victory in game one of the twinbill after throwing 2 2/3 innings of relief. In game two of the doubleheader, she pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, holding the Aztecs to three hits and striking out two. She struck out 13 batters to give her 422 in her collegiate career to break the school’s all-time strikeout record.
